ANTOINE ST-ONGE, Bassoon
Antoine St-Onge joined the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Bassoonist in June 2018 at the age of just twenty-three, and has since established himself as one of the most dynamic voices on the Canadian orchestral scene. Named one of CBC's "30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30" in 2019, he brings both technical mastery and a joyful, communicative spirit to everything he plays. A native of Morin-Heights, Québec, he earned his Bachelor's degree from the Montreal Music Conservatory and his Master's from McGill University, studying under Montreal Symphony Orchestra members Mathieu Harel and Stéphane Lévesque. He also spent a semester studying with Carlo Colombo at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in Lyon. Before his appointment in Calgary, St-Onge performed with the Montreal Contemporary Ensemble (ECM+) and was a regular substitute with the Montreal Symphony, Drummondville Symphony, l'Orchestre des Pays de Savoie, and Les Violons du Roy. He has participated in masterclasses with Dag Jensen, Gustavo Nunez, and Christopher Millard, and has appeared as a featured soloist in works by Rossini and André Jolivet. He performs on a Benson Bell bassoon crafted in Ontario, Canada.
