Maria van der Sloot
Violinist Maria van der Sloot enjoys a diverse career as a performer and educator. A grand prizewinner in chamber music at the Canadian Music Competition, she performs extensively throughout North America. She has appeared as soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and Calgary Civic Symphony and has performed for Music for Food, NPR’s From the Top, the Boston Symphony Prelude series, the Virginia Arts Festival, Sound Atlas, San Francisco’s Chamber Music Tuesday, and the Berkeley Piano Club.
In 2022, Maria joined the acclaimed, Juno-nominated contemporary trio, Land’s End Ensemble. The trio has performed over 130 new works; their forthcoming recording of John Corigliano’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and Vincent Ho’s “Gryphon Realms” will be released on the Naxos label in the summer of 2024. Maria is additionally a first violinist in the Calgary Philharmonic and was previously the concertmaster of the Calgary Civic Symphony. She is on faculty at Mount Royal University, where she is the Violin Facilitator and Instructor for the Advanced Performance Program and Academy for Young Artists, as well as part of the Ensemble-In-Residence with Land’s End Ensemble.
Maria received her B.M. (Honours) from the New England Conservatory and M.M. (Distinction) from the San Francisco Conservatory. Her mentors include Donald Weilerstein, Ian Swensen, and Cordula Merks. Off the violin, she enjoys motorcycle rides with her fiancé and running marathons.
