Oliver Herbert, Cello

Oliver Herbert brings intensity, clarity, and unmistakable musical direction to everything he plays. Recipient of a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he has appeared as concerto soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and orchestras across the Americas and Europe, collaborating with conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Giancarlo Guerrero, Teddy Abrams, and Alexander Shelley. Of his subscription debut with the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Classical Voice wrote: "His technical command, full-throated but never indulgent tone, crisp yet expressive phrasing, and tactful use of vibrato flowed together...youthful but magisterial." In addition to top prizes at the Lutosławski International Cello Competition, Klein International String Competition, and Stulberg Competition, he has been selected for the Orpheum Foundation's development program for young soloists and the Verbier Festival's Jean-Nicolas Firmenich Prize. An adventurous curator, he has organized concert projects for Deutschlandfunk and the TICA Festival in Hong Kong. As a chamber musician, he appears regularly at Marlboro Music, La Jolla SummerFest, Rheingau, ChamberFest Cleveland, and the Ravinia Festival. A graduate of Curtis and the Colburn School - where he studied with Carter Brey, Pamela Frank, and Clive Greensmith - he is currently in the Professional Studies Program at the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson. He performs on a 1769 Guadagnini cello from the Janigro family.
