2025 Summer Festival
July 14-19, 2025
Manuscripts that languished in libraries for centuries; composers who fell out of favour, only to be restored to their former glory long after they died; documents that barely survived the atrocities of war (and a composer who didn't); and masterpieces resurrected from the waste basket – Lost & Found will bring these and many other musical treasures to our fourth annual festival.
Everything old is new again. History repeats itself. But music, dear chamberhood, cleanses the soul. And that’s magnificent.
Jonathan Swensen (cello), Roman Rabinovich (piano), Alexi Kenney (violin) perform May 8, 2025 in Calgary.
Capriccio Errante, premiering May 8th in Calgary!
Join us on May 8th at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church to hear three of the world’s finest concert musicians playing a unique program curated especially for you by CFW’s Roman Rabinovich. As part of this concert you’ll hear the premiere performance of a new composition by Roman for piano and violin, Capriccio Errante.
Violinist Alexi Kenney joins Roman for this incredible premiere. Alexi has earned wide-spread acclaim for his insightful and artistic interpretations, as well as his inspired programming, often melding the new with the old, the familiar with the obscure. Winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild Competition and laureate of the 2012 Menuhin Competition, he has been profiled by Musical America, Strings Magazine, and The New York Times.
Cellist Jonathan Swensen performs Poulenc's Cello Sonata with Roman. Jonathan was recently awarded joint First Prize at the 2024 Naumburg International Cello Competition and has been featured as both Musical America’s ‘New Artist of the Month’ and ‘One to Watch’ in Gramophone Magazine. ChamberFest West audiences will remember Jonathan’s performances in our 2023 festival, including Purcell’s Fairy Queen, Golijov’s Last Round, Mendelssohn’s String Quartet, and Beethoven’s Archduke.
And of course, CFW’s Roman Rabinovich – composer, visual artist and concert pianist with a repertoire spanning six centuries, from Byrd to Boulez and beyond. In addition to his duets with Alexi and Jonathan, all three musicians will perform Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio in A Minor, the only piano trio the great composer wrote.

Extraordinary Performances
Each of our summer festivals is a unique experience shared with our audience. The fusion of feelings each listener has to a live, intimate performance creates a special collective moment that lives beyond the concert hall.
International Musicians
ChamberFest West brings internationally acclaimed classical musicians to perform with some of Canada’s best and together they create a unique fusion of styles and interpretations.
What is Chamber Music?
Chamber music is composed for performance by a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit inside a palace chamber. There is usually one performer per part and chamber compositions frequently resemble a conversation among the musicians. As a result, playing chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, that differ from the skills required for playing solo or symphonic works. Performances become a personal experience between the artists and the audience.
